“I truly believe that early intervention is the way to stop the cycle of abuse and set children on a good path in life. And Childhaven is the only place where this can happen in King County.”

Veronica VanCouwenberghe

Program Director, Lake City Branch

Veronica VanCouwenberghe feels lucky to have landed at Childhaven. She gets paid to play with children—a real plus—and she gets to go home each day knowing that the work she does helps strengthen families.

Veronica started at Childhaven in 1997 as a lead teacher in a therapeutic child care classroom. She also served as a child and family therapist and case manager before being hired to oversee the Lake City Branch in 2008.

In addition to managing the branch and supervising staff, she works directly with children and their families, conducts play therapy and parent-child interactional therapy sessions, and goes on home visits.

Veronica earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology and Sociology in 1994 from the University of Utah and a Masters of Arts in Psychology in 2000 from Antioch University in Seattle.

She attributes the agency’s success to the quality and dedication of its staff and the clarity of its mission. “That is the driving force,” she says. “We all want to make a difference in the lives of the families we serve.”

The single best part of her job? “Seeing a child form healthy attachments and hearing them laugh.”
