Director of Communications

The Director of Communications will lead all aspects of Childhaven’s communications strategy. You are a copy writing genius and public relations expert responsible for developing and implementing a communications strategy that articulates Childhaven’s mission and value, and advances the organizations leadership position and fundraising goals. You will direct digital and print communications, including social media, website, print publications, and marketing collateral. This position will ensure consistent messaging and branding throughout the organization and provide oversight on activities in support of strategic plan initiatives.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Communications Strategy

  • Oversee the design and implementation of a dual purpose strategic communications plan designed to a) accelerate Childhaven’s fundraising program and b) advance the organization’s strategic goals
  • Provide counsel to leadership on communications and engagement strategies for new initiatives, advocacy, and partnerships

Brand Development & Management

  • Act as lead brand manager for the organization to ensure consistency and professionalism in all external communications
  • Ensure consistency of messaging; ensure all development staff, senior staff, and the Board of Trustees are all conversant about Childhaven’s programs, impact, and organizational needs
  • Plan and oversee development of marketing and advertising efforts
  • Ensure that website and social media presence continue to develop so that they represent our brand and remain useful to our members, partners, and donors
  • Manage video and photo production related to communication plan and events
  • Serve as point person for all organizational collateral

Public & Media Relations

  • Ensure optimal visibility of Childhaven
  • Serve as the lead media strategist for the organization; field press inquiries and direct to the appropriate spokespeople
  • Author and disseminate press releases and event announcements to promote the organization’s major events and accomplishments
  • Create a visibility plan for the President and ensure they are prepped well in advance for all public engagements
  • Pitch media outlets and build outstanding relationships with members of the local press; i.e. manage the Fund for the Needy campaign with The Seattle Times
  • Develop a Childhaven speakers bureau and prep staff/stakeholders for public relations activities
  • Work closely with PR firms and/or other communications consultants

Content Development

  • Serve as the organization’s lead storyteller and message developer
  • Lead the development of collateral, including printed brochures, outreach materials, and special event marketing
  • Write print materials and digital content; draft inspiring, compelling, and memorable speeches for the President and other speakers
  • Serve as the lead project manager of multiple communications and development projects
  • Provide direction, ideas, and editorial support to other members of the development, communications, and events team

Management

  • Under the direction of the President, and in strong partnership with the Chief Development Officer, provide inspired, can-do leadership to the development team
  • Develop and oversee annual communications budget
  • Manage external vendors as appropriate (i.e., graphic designer)
  • Attend Meetings of the Board of Directors as needed; manage Communications Committee
  • Other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS

  • 7+ years relevant experience in non-profit communications and development
  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, English, or related field; or equivalent education or experience
  • Experience developing and implementing multi-channel strategic communications plans
  • Strong project manager; ability to manage complex projects simultaneously
  • Outstanding writing and editing skills with a demonstrated ability to produce high-quality, error-free written and oral communications for multiple audiences
  • Experience with brand development and management
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; able to collaborating effectively with stakeholders of diverse backgrounds, including Board of Trustees, program staff
  • Strong background in public and media relations; ability to identify trends and develop relationships with the press
  • Self-starter with ability to work in a fast-paced environment and exercise excellent judgement under pressure

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of principles relevant to non-profit development and fundraising
  • Knowledge of writing and editing to style guides (AP, Chicago, etc.)
  • Website management and e-communications experience
  • Experience with social media platforms and digital communications channels
  • Familiar with design concepts and Adobe Creative Suite software
  • Video and visual asset production experience
  • Skilled at working with external communications and design firms, photographers and other contractors
  • Experience in education, health care, or social services is preferred
  • Available to work occasional evenings and weekends
