In face of rising preschool expulsion rates, Childhaven’s
integrated programs equip children to flourish
“Across the nation, preschoolers are being expelled at rates at least three times that of K-12 students” Megan Beers, PhD, Director of Quality Improvement at Childhaven.
This is an alarming trend because it means that children and families are not getting the tools they need to support the positive social and emotional development that is the foundation for all learning, future relationships, and school readiness.
Childhaven is trying to change this trend.
“Many of these children exhibit behaviors that early learning environments simply aren’t designed to support.” says Beers. If a child in a typical preschool becomes too aggressive, he or she could be expelled. Our teachers at Childhaven are trained to look past the aggression and support the emotional needs that are driving it.
Some of our families are facing significant challenges such as homelessness, or a parent who is
struggling with mental illness or drug addiction. Childhaven’s unique model blends early learning
curriculum with mental health and home visiting services, to effectively support children in their early development.
An infant mental health therapist by training, Beers is building on Childhaven’s no-expulsion policy,
helping redesign our infant care and preschool classrooms to better serve a wider spectrum of children
and get them ready for kindergarten.
The kindness and generosity of our community, including supporters like you, is what makes it possible for Childhaven to have a no-expulsion policy while equipping the children and families at Childhaven to flourish in every aspect of their lives.
Each year, your decision to support Childhaven helps us to continue to serve more and serve better.
Donor Spotlight: Doron Weisbarth is proud to support children and families in his community
Fourteen years ago, Doron Weisbarth was planning a birthday party for his one-year-old first born. But when friends and family asked about gift options, Doron and his wife, Juju—who own Seattle-based real estate agency Weisbarth & Associates—realized that all of their son’s needs were cared for. “We decided to ask our friends and relatives to give to kids whose needs were urgent, real, and deep,” explains Doron. “Thus began our partnership with Childhaven.”
Childhaven is deeply grateful for the Weisbarths’ support and partnership, which has now spanned over a decade. Over the past three years, Weisbarth & Associates has donated a portion of every home sale to Childhaven—totaling well over $100,000.
“Childhaven’s choice to focus on early intervention means that they can create a solid foundation for both children and their families,” Doron says. “We feel that our donation dollars have the greatest impact and the greatest return for our society in general when they are invested in Childhaven.”
